| Originally established as
a temporary training site or World War Two bombing practice,
the Nellis Range has become the largest classified swath of
land in the world.
Encompassing 3.1 million acres, combined with more than 12,000
square miles of airspace, Nellis envelops the Tonopah Test
Range, Groom Lake, and a host of other facilities. The Nevada
Test Site is contiguous with Nellis, having been carved out
of Nellis by the DoE in 1951.
Several times a year, Nellis hosts the "Red Flag"
and "Green Flag" exercises, where pilots from around
the world come to train in a simulated battle-space above
the range.
The CENTER FOR
LAND USE INTERPRETATION has an excellent CD-ROM about
the Nellis Range.
