Also known as "Area 51," the facility at Groom Lake has the paradoxical distinction of being America's most popular "secret base."

Created in 1955 to test the CIA's U2 airplane, Groom Lake expanded over the years to support the development of the A-12, the Stealth Fighter (F-117a), cruise missiles, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and numerous other classified aircraft. Groom Lake remains a major center of classified weapons testing.
