The California prison system is notorious for its secrecy,
its lack of transparency, and its multiple "codes of
silence." These institutions and tactics are used by
the prison system in order to remove prison spending from
public oversight, remove prisons conditions from public
scrutiny, and to prevent corrupt guards and officials from
being accountable for their often brutal actions. In short,
it is very difficult to know what goes on behind the locked
doors and gates of California's prison system.
The sculptural works presented here are
in part a response to these walls of silence. They
suggest the lengths to which someone might have to go if
they wanted to create images or recordings of California's
carceral landscape.
Installation
Information about installation
work will come soon.
This project includes a series of recordings
made by various people in various formats (i.e. audio and
video). Some recordings have been made by anonymous contributors
to the project, while others have been culled from sources
including private collections and state archives.
