A Haunted Landscape
At 1926 Exhibition Studies space, 1926 N. Halstead
February 17, 2001, Chicago, IL
This spring, Chicago will be confronted with it's hidden
histories, unseen entities, and noisy specters. For the
Haunted Landscape show, curated by sound artist Trevor
Paglen, local artists were asked to create site-specific
sound installations dealing with the subject of 'haunting.'
The results of this exercise will be heard from March
31st to April 21st at the 1926 Exhibition Studies Space
at 1926 N. Halstead.
In Stephanie Rothenberg's Pan-O-Matic, viewers stand
in a marked location and find themselves in various oppressive
'waiting' environments - situations where the unfulfilled
promises of consumerism are painfully reified. In Kelly
Kirschner's recordings of antique appliances, the corpses
of techno/nuclear utopias fill the air with a shadow-like
hum.
"Many of the spaces and institutions in our lives are
possible as a result of some kind of repression, injustice,
or exclusion. In a sense, we can describe space as being
haunted by that which it excludes," says Paglen. "I wanted
to create a situation whereby artists were provided the
opportunity to deconstruct space through the use of sound."
Artists featured in A Haunted Landscape include Matthew
Hanner, Becca Mann, E.C. Brown, Helidon Gjergji, Trevor
Paglen, Dmitry Strakovsky, Sarah Attwood, Kelly Kirtschner,
