A darkened room where audio recordings made inside the Security
Housing Unit (SHU) at Pelican Bay State Prison play on a loop.
The SHU at Pelican Bay is the country’s original “supermax”
prison. The amplitude of the audio modulates a bare light bulb,
causing the extremely dim light bulb to flicker in synch with
the ambient sound.
